A Brief History of Our Church

Hope United Methodist Church is the result of the merger of several earlier churches. Its origins go back to 1790 with the founding of Ebenezer Methodist Church in Philadelphia.
In 1942, Ebenezer merged with the Bethesda Church which had been founded in 1831. The new combined church was located in what is now Havertown, at the corner of Eagle and Steel Roads.
In June of 2004 Trinity United Methodist Church, also located in Havertown, merged with Ebenezer. The name Hope United Methodist Chuch was chosen for this new combined church.

CHOIR - Rehearsals right after Sunday worship - Every week - September through June.
BIBLE STUDY - Please Note: Bible Study will be held on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm.
FOOD CUPBOARD - Your participation in this monthly drive to attain non-perishable food items for the needy in our area is needed and appreciated. - Collection is the third Sunday of the month.
COMMUNION BREAD - If anyone is willing to bake bread for communion, please contact the church office or Pastor Jim.
RECYCLING - LET’S DO OUR PART - We are recycling paper each Sunday following worship. Bulletins and other paper can be placed in the bin in the Narthex in front of the coat racks.
Narthex Nosh - Our monthly opportunity to fellowship after worship has been well received. Thanks to all for making this a great success!!! Upcoming are: May 13 - Muffins for Moms; June 17 - Donuts for Dads.
ROCK SOLID SUNDAY SCHOOL - Parents & Children – our new Sunday School design began on January 8 with 3 classes – Childcare (infant to age 3), Young Children (Age 4 to 1st Grade), Older Children (Grades 2-6).
PASTOR ATTENDING GENERAL CONFERENCE Pastor Jim will be attending the General Conference April 30th thru May 4th in Tampa Florida. In Pastor’s absence Rev. Mary Grey and/ or Joanne Miles will handle all pastoral calls or urgent situations.
HOPE PRAYER NET - Hope’s Thursday Prayer Group has established a new Internet prayer chain for our prayer requests—we have named it Prayer Net. Whenever you have a specific prayer request, please Email or call Bill Engler (see Hope for the Week for the email address).
CEMETERY CLEANUP RESCHEDULED TO MAY 19TH There will be a Cemetery cleanup on Saturday, May 19th, 9:00 a.m. with Owen Mc Crosson - and some of the Boy Scouts from his troop. Owen is working for his Eagle’s Badge and will be working to clean up and do repairs where necessary at the cemetery.
FLEA MARKET/STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL Once again we are planning for our Strawberry Festival/Flea Market on June 2nd, 2012 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. For the flyer, click HERE. Items for the Flea Market can be left in Thomas Hall. AFTER MAY 14th flea market items can be left in Jones Chapel.
CONFIRMATION CLASS - This year’s Confirmation Class will meet on Sunday afternoons immediately after worship until May 20 followed by Confirmation Sunday on June 3. Students in grades 6-12 are welcome. Please let Pastor Jim know if you would like to participate.
EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE - Pastor Jim and Joanne Miles, Lay Leader, will attend the Eastern Pennsylvania Annual Conference at the Expo Center in Oaks, PA from Thursday, May 17th to Saturday, May 19th. Contact the Church Office with any urgent situations.
WESLEYAN CIRCLE - next scheduled Circle meeting is Wednesday May 16 at the home of Sandy Young at 7:30pm.
CHURCH COUNCIL Please note the next Church Council meeting is June 26th at 7:30 pm. There will be no meetings held in the summer. The next meeting will be in September and than every other month there after.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL - JUNE 25 TO 29, 2012 It’s time to start thinking about VBS and as usual, volunteers are needed as teachers, helpers, craft person, recreation, and kitchen help. If you are willing to help please call Colleen Stango.
OUTREACH COMMITTEE An Outreach Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6th, at 7:30 pm. If you are unable to attend please contact Doris Peabody.
MEMORIAL FUND - The Hope Memorial Scholarship Fund is open to all Hope members.
Criteria for these funds is as follows: (1) must be a member involved in the church; (2) attending a full time educational program; (3) write a short note addressed to the Trustees requesting consideration of funds; (4) a student can apply twice a year for the fall and spring semester.
METHODIST NIGHT AT THE PHILLIES - This year’s Methodist Night at the Phillies will be Saturday, August 4, 2012 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. To guarantee a seat, you are encouraged to lock in early, please contact Joanne Miles.
ALTAR FLOWERS AND CHURCH BULLETINS - There are sign-up sheets for Altar Flowers and Church Bulletins on a table in back of the Narthex. If you are interested in dedicating Sunday altar flowers to help beautify the altar or monthly church bulletins please sign the sheet or contact the church office. The cost remains the same for Altar Flowers, $35.00 and Monthly Bulletins, $30.00. Thank you.
BREAKFAST BAGS FOR THE HOMEBOUND - The Outreach Committee is collecting funds and/or items for Breakfast Bags for Aid for Friends. If you have questions, please see Doris Peabody.
ADOPT-A-SOLDIER - If you would like to send any holiday greetings (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas) to our servicemen and women, address to “Any Serviceman or Woman” and put it in the Adopt-a-Soldier basket and Marion will include it in her packages. Be sure to write a few lines to let our servicemen and women know we are thinking of them.

CASSEROLES FOR ST. JOHN HOSPICE - The second Tuesday of each month casseroles are prepared in the Thomas Hall kitchen at 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering for this stewardship program you can call Kathy Reisch or show up on the second Tuesday of the month.
